Almost Valentine’s Day

Posted by Range Officer Rhonda on February 5, 2009

In keeping with the old, OLD traditions – I think everyone should present to their friends and loved ones NOT a card and candy, but a rose and a book. Those are the original gifts and, I think, much more suitable. yellowrose This yellow rose was a gift to me, fortunately in bush form so I could plant it. It has had to move and be caged up a few times because the deer love to eat my blooms just as they are about to open. Now we have finally given up digging and moving the plant – it is now a potted plant.

The gift can be very personal – first you will have to research the language of flowers and what the different colors and types of roses stand for. As for the book, that too can be personal. What do they like – sewing, gardening, monsters, western, romance? Choose a book that suits their personality.  A TV or soaps fan? Try the spring preview of new shows in the TV Guide magazine. Want to make it really special? Make a homemade book cover to go with the book. It can consist of photos, paper, ribbons, cloth, drawings, a poem; whatever your creative mind would like. It could even – gasp – look like a Valentine’s Day card!

Of course, there is the chocolate thing going there. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to give a little (1# box) of candies – as long as you include the flower and the book!
