Disappearing act

Posted by Range Officer Rhonda on February 28, 2008

I have to keep a sense of humor or I’ll go insane. In a handoff yesterday, Old Bro left dad at Mid Bro’s house on his way to work. Mid Bro gets home from his work less than an hour later – and dad has vanished. The search is on. Dad has conveniently lost his cell phone and had the Onstar removed from his truck.

I am so sorry about your Dad, have wondered most of the week if he has been found. I work at a Senior Recreation Center and this sort of thing is not uncommon there. The police and other authorities here don’t seem to put a disappeared elder at a high priority, and social services seem to point the finger at the family, no matter how hard the family has tried. Does your area (or Dad’s, since he’s mad at you) have a SECURED Alzheimer’s care facility? The two that I know of are a lot like prison–no in and out unless someone buzzes you in or out–and they are pricey. But they do keep people from wandering off and they don’t appear to medicate them into submission. Also–you must have read The 36-Hour Day. I’ll hold a good thought for you.
